Denmark’s Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen of the Moderates says he is surprised by coalition partner Venstre’s statement that the party is prepared to withdraw from the citizenship convention if it cannot be changed.

The announcement came from Venstre’s leader, Troels Lund Poulsen, in an interview with Berlingske.dk on Saturday.

On the social media platform X, Lars Løkke Rasmussen writes:

“Somewhat surprised. V (Venstre – ed.) wants to pull Denmark out of the Citizenship Convention without prior discussion in the government. Are we supposed to go it alone and withdraw Denmark? Unprecedented. At a time when the international rule of law is under pressure, and when the alliance of EU countries supporting Denmark’s approach to immigration policy is growing: where we are open but at the same time have national control. Danish unilateral action is, in my view, by no means in the interest of either us or the matter at hand.”
