Denmark summons Iran’s chargé d’affaires for talks following abuses against demonstrators
Iran’s highest diplomatic representative in Denmark, the chargé d’affaires, was summoned for talks at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs at Asiatisk Plads on Tuesday. The summons was issued at the initiative of Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen in response to the Iranian regime’s latest violent abuses against demonstrators.
The purpose of the meeting was to express the Danish government’s clear condemnation of the regime’s use of violence against the civilian population and to urge Iran to respect its international obligations. These include, among other things, the right to freedom of expression, association and assembly, as well as ensuring free access to the internet.
Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen states:
“– The Iranian regime has a long and brutal history of cracking down hard on the people’s protests. We have once again witnessed this in recent weeks, and it is simply unacceptable. We made this very clear to the Iranian chargé d’affaires today. The EU has already imposed extensive sanctions on Iran, and we are ready to take further steps from the Danish side. As is well known, we also already support a terrorist designation of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps.”
As Iran’s ambassador to Denmark is currently away, the meeting was held with the chargé d’affaires.
