Convicted of Fraud against the Elderly
A 25-year-old man from Rødovre has been sentenced to 9 months in prison for fraud and data fraud against several elderly citizens.
The verdict was delivered on Friday at the Court in Esbjerg.
Between January 23 and February 5, he called 15 elderly citizens pretending to be from the bank. He told them that their bank accounts or credit cards had been misused and managed to get them to provide payment cards and codes, cash, and jewelry. The 25-year-old subsequently withdrew money from the elderly citizens’ accounts at various ATMs. In total, he obtained cash and withdrew money amounting to around 360,000 Danish kroner.
The frauds took place in the Varde and Esbjerg areas, as well as in places like Jels, Kolding, and Aalborg.
The 25-year-old has been in custody since he appeared in a remand hearing on February 6.
In court on Friday, he pleaded guilty. He requested time to consider whether to appeal the verdict.
The court decided to release him after the verdict, a decision that the prosecution has appealed to the Appeals Court.
