Today the bells ring to commemorate the liberation
Today at 12.00, church bells ring across the country to mark the 80th anniversary of Denmark’s liberation after five years of German occupation.
It is Minister of Ecclesiastical Affairs Morten Dahlin and the bishops of the national church who are urging the bells to ring in the country’s more than 2000 churches. The minister states that the church had a special significance during World War II.
“During the occupation, the churches were a sanctuary, a place where people could seek hope and comfort, even in the darkest times,” Minister of Ecclesiastical Affairs Morten Dahlin said in a press release.
Morten Dahlin himself will even be found in the bell tower of the Cathedral in Copenhagen on Monday, where he will be ringing the large bell.
