The Prime Minister thanks the Queen for her dedication and efforts for the Kingdom
In connection with Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II’s New Year’s Eve announcement of abdication, Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has issued a statement.
“On behalf of the entire population, I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Her Majesty the Queen for her lifelong dedication and tireless efforts for the Kingdom.
Although the duty and role of the monarch have been passed down for over 1,000 years, it is still difficult to comprehend that the time has come for a change of reign.
Many of us have never known another sovereign. Queen Margrethe embodies Denmark and, throughout the years, has articulated the words and emotions that define us as a people and a nation.
In the new year, Crown Prince Frederik will be proclaimed King, and Crown Princess Mary will become Queen. The Realm will have a new monarch and a new royal couple. We can eagerly look forward to all of this with the certainty that they are prepared for the responsibility and the task.
But tonight and in the coming time, we will acknowledge the Queen’s undeniable significance for Denmark, the Faroe Islands, and Greenland. We do so with equal parts gratitude and admiration.
Queen Margrethe has brought honor to the Kingdom.”
