Sikandar Siddique loses seat on Copenhagen City Council
Sikandar Siddique, political leader of the Independent Greens, will no longer serve on Copenhagen City Council.
On Thursday, the City Council decided that Siddique was no longer eligible to hold the seat and appointed his substitute, Asham Agha Nadeem, in his place.
The decision follows the cancellation of Siddique’s registered residence in Copenhagen in February after an investigation into whether he actually lived at the Copenhagen address where he was registered. The decision was subsequently upheld by the Ministry of Research, Higher Education and Digitalisation.
The residency case began before last year’s municipal election, when Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet questioned whether Siddique lived in Copenhagen or was in fact living with his wife and children at their house in Herlev.
Siddique has previously claimed that his criticism of “Zionism” and “the system” is the reason he can no longer serve on Copenhagen City Council.
In a post on Facebook, he wrote:
“A case that has arisen from political pressure because we in the Independent Greens were the only ones who dared to stand up to the system, power-hungry politicians and the Zionism that is allowed to lead around those in power who are supposed to represent the people.”
