Program Revealed for King Frederik X’s Proclamation Ceremony in Danish Monarchy Transition

The Royal House has now announced the program for the succession on Sunday, where H.M. The Queen steps down as the Queen of Denmark and hands over the throne to H.R.H. The Crown Prince.

1:35 PM – The Crown Prince Couple departs from Amalienborg The Crown Prince Couple and H.R.H. Prince Christian travel by car from Frederik VIII’s Palace, Amalienborg, to Christiansborg Palace.

1:37 PM – H.M. The Queen travels in a carriage from Amalienborg H.M. The Queen travels in a carriage from Christian IX’s Palace, Amalienborg, to Christiansborg Palace, escorted by the Guard Hussar Regiment’s Horse Squadron.

2:00 PM – Council of State at Christiansborg Palace H.M. The Queen, H.R.H. The Crown Prince, and H.R.H. Prince Christian participate with the government and the Secretary of State in the Council of State.

The succession occurs during the Council of State meeting the moment the Queen signs a declaration of abdication.

2:15 PM – H.M. Queen Margrethe’s departure from Christiansborg Palace H.M. Queen Margrethe travels by car to Christian IX’s Palace, Amalienborg.

2:30 PM – The Royal Couple hosts a reception for specially invited guests at Christiansborg Palace

3:00 PM – Proclamation from the balcony at Christiansborg Palace H.M. King Frederik X steps out onto the balcony at Christiansborg Palace, after which the Prime Minister proclaims the succession.

The King speaks and concludes with the motto.

3:10 PM – Salute from Battery Sixtus After the proclamation, a salute of 3 x 27 shots is fired from Battery Sixtus in Holmen, Copenhagen.

3:10 PM – The Royal Flag is lowered and raised at Amalienborg After the proclamation, the Royal Flag is lowered at Christian IX’s Palace and raised at Frederik VIII’s Palace, Amalienborg.

3:30 PM – The Royal Couple travels in a carriage from Christiansborg Palace After the proclamation, the Royal Couple travels in a carriage, escorted by the Guard Hussar Regiment’s Horse Squadron, from Christiansborg Palace to Frederik VIII’s Palace, Amalienborg.

5:00 PM – Transfer of the royal banners Transfer of the royal banners from Christian IX’s Palace to Frederik VIII’s Palace, Amalienborg.

Monday, January 15

10:00 AM – Reception in the Parliament The royal family participates in the Parliament’s marking of the succession. During the meeting in the Parliament Chamber, the Speaker of the Parliament and the Prime Minister speak, with the Prime Minister delivering an oral message from the King to the Parliament. Subsequently, the royal family attends a reception in the Landsting Chamber.

Sunday, January 21

2:00 PM – Festive Service at Aarhus Cathedral The royal family participates in a festive service at Aarhus Cathedral. In celebration of the succession, a festive service takes place at Aarhus Cathedral with representatives from the official Denmark and representatives from the city of Aarhus. The service is led by the royal confessor and bishop of the Aarhus Diocese, Henrik Wigh-Poulsen.
