Danish national among seven charged over alleged Hamas weapons plot
A Danish national is among seven people charged in Germany in connection with an alleged operation to obtain weapons for the foreign terrorist organisation Hamas and preparations for a planned attack in Germany or Austria.
Germany’s Federal Prosecutor’s Office filed charges on 8 September before the State Security Senate of the Berlin Higher Regional Court.
The seven defendants include a Danish national, two German nationals, three people born in Lebanon and a Bulgarian national.
All seven are suspected of membership of a foreign terrorist organisation and of preparing a serious act of violence endangering the state. They are also accused of various violations of German weapons legislation. Two of the people born in Lebanon and one of the German nationals face additional allegations of violating Germany’s War Weapons Control Act.
According to the indictment, all seven belong to Hamas.
Prosecutors allege that the organisation’s military wing, the Qassam Brigades, began establishing weapons depots in Europe some time ago.
According to the Federal Prosecutor’s Office, Hamas had by July 2025 at the latest begun planning a specific deadly attack in Germany or Austria targeting representatives of Israel, Jewish people or people considered pro-Israel.
The alleged attack was intended to take place around the second anniversary of the Hamas attack on Israel on 7 October 2023, meaning in early October 2025.
Prosecutors allege that senior Hamas officials tasked several of the defendants, including the Danish national, with obtaining weapons and ammunition in Germany.
When three of the defendants were arrested in Berlin on 1 October 2025, the group had allegedly obtained one functioning fully automatic rifle, 13 functioning handguns and more than 700 rounds of ammunition.
According to prosecutors, another suspect, who is being prosecuted separately, transported some of the weapons to Vienna and stored them there. He is also alleged to have recorded a video in advance claiming responsibility for the planned attack on behalf of Hamas.
The Danish national and three other defendants were arrested at different times between November 2025 and May 2026.
All seven defendants remain in pre-trial detention.
Another suspect was arrested in London on 3 November 2025 following a German request for legal assistance. According to the Federal Prosecutor’s Office, he has not yet been transferred to Germany.
