Heavy rain warning issued for most of Denmark

The Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) has issued a category 1 severe weather warning for all of Denmark except Bornholm, with between 30 and 50 millimetres of rain expected in several areas.

The rain is associated with a frontal system moving into Denmark from the south and southwest during the night into Friday. Periods of rain are expected to continue until Saturday morning, followed by showers moving in from the west.

In western Denmark, the warning is in effect from 5 a.m. on Friday until 2 p.m. on Saturday. DMI expects between 30 and 50 millimetres of rain during this period.

In eastern Denmark, the warning applies from 9 a.m. on Friday until 1 a.m. on Saturday. Between 30 and 50 millimetres of rain is also expected here, with localised cloudbursts potentially bringing more than 15 millimetres of rain within 30 minutes.

The rain could be particularly heavy in some areas, with local thunderstorms also possible.

There is still uncertainty about where the heaviest rainfall will occur. According to DMI, current forecasts point to western Denmark, although this could change as new forecasts become available.
