Former children’s home residents awarded DKK 300,000 each

The Danish Ministry of Social Affairs has reached a settlement with 13 people who were formerly placed at the Solgården children’s home in Tarm. Each will receive DKK 300,000 in compensation.

Solgården operated from 1949 to 1976, and former residents have since spoken about violence, abuse and sexual abuse during their time at the children’s home.

On 23 March 2026, the 13 former residents filed a lawsuit against the Danish state, each seeking DKK 300,000 in compensation for abuse they suffered as children.

The Ministry of Social Affairs acknowledges that there were extensive and systematic failures during their time at Solgården and that the state failed in its duty of supervision. The ministry has now reached a settlement under which the 13 will receive the amount they claimed.

“The accounts of the 13 former residents are heartbreaking. A superintendent who subjected children to violence and sexual abuse. As a society, we did not protect these children well enough. It has taken a long time to investigate what happened back then, so it is good that there is now some clarity,” Social Affairs Minister Monika Rubin said.

The lawsuit also included one person who had not been placed at Solgården. As that person was therefore not covered by the state’s duty of supervision, they are not part of the settlement.
