Sharp rise in thefts from bicycles in Copenhagen

The number of thefts from bicycles has increased significantly in Copenhagen, according to new figures from Copenhagen Police. The trend has prompted insurance company If to urge cyclists to take extra care of their belongings.

According to Copenhagen Police, 1,300 thefts from bicycles were recorded in the police district during the first six months of the year. In the same period last year, 753 cases were recorded, corresponding to an increase of nearly 73 per cent.

The thefts include bags stolen from bicycle baskets, e-bike batteries and other bicycle equipment.

If says it has also recorded an increase in the number of claims. During the first six months of the year, the number of thefts involving bags taken from bicycles has doubled compared with the same period last year.

Copenhagen Police already warned during the Easter period that thieves were targeting bags and shopping bags left loose in bicycle baskets or not properly secured to luggage racks.
