Government allocates DKK 100 million to public transport in rural areas

The Government is allocating DKK 100 million already this year to local and flexible transport solutions aimed at strengthening public transport in rural areas and smaller towns.

The funding will be used for solutions based on local needs and designed to make it easier for people to travel to work, education, leisure activities and community life. According to the Government, improved local transport solutions can, among other things, enhance young people’s opportunities to travel to and from educational institutions.

Minister for Cities, Rural Districts and Transport Signe Munk states that the Government has previously compensated public transport operators for high fuel prices in order to prevent the closure of bus routes. With the new allocation, the Government aims to support the development of flexible and locally tailored transport solutions.

The funding may, among other things, be used for community-run buses and demand-responsive bus services, where smaller buses operate according to passengers’ needs.

The Government will also support the development of shared national payment solutions to make it easier to pay for journeys using these flexible transport services.

During the autumn, public transport operators and municipalities are to submit specific project proposals to the Danish Road Traffic Authority. The funding will then be allocated to the projects that meet the objectives of the scheme.
