DMI Issues Warning for Heavy Rain and Localized Cloudbursts

DMI has issued a Category 1 warning for heavy rain and localized cloudbursts. The warning takes effect for Zealand, the Danish islands, and Bornholm from Sunday afternoon. From midnight between Monday and Tuesday, it will be extended to cover most of the country. Northern and western Jutland remain exempt.

According to DMI, between 25 and 35 millimetres of rain may fall within six hours, and the heaviest showers could locally develop into cloudbursts, bringing more than 15 millimetres of rain in 30 minutes. The showers may also be accompanied by thunderstorms, hail, and strong wind gusts.

On Sunday, the first thundery showers are expected to develop over Zealand before spreading southward and westward during the evening and overnight. On Monday, rain and thunderstorms will affect large parts of the country, but DMI emphasizes that the cloudbursts will be localized and that it is still too early to determine where the heaviest showers will occur.

The unsettled weather is caused by a low-pressure system forming over southern Scandinavia, where warm, humid air meets colder air aloft. DMI is closely monitoring the situation and will update the warning as needed.
