New Vision Plan Aims to Create a Greener and More Open Sundholm

A new vision plan for the outdoor areas of Sundholm on the island of Amager aims to create more green spaces, improved lighting, and stronger connections to the surrounding neighbourhood. The plan was presented on Constitution Day and could cost up to DKK 200 million to implement.

The vision has been developed by the Sønderbro Urban Renewal Programme of the City of Copenhagen, which has been working on the project since 2024 with support from the philanthropic association Realdania. Realdania contributed DKK 1.5 million towards the development of the plan.

The objective is to open up the area and make Sundholm a more integrated part of the city while improving conditions for the people who live in and use the area.

Around 250 socially vulnerable adults live at Sundholm, and the area’s outdoor spaces are in need of significant upgrading. According to the vision plan, new green urban spaces, better lighting, and improved parking arrangements will help create a safer and more dignified environment for residents.

At the same time, many other local residents use the area every day. Children and young people pass through Sundholm on their way to and from schools and daycare centres, while the site also includes a community centre, a cultural centre, and a shared studio space for artists.

The cost of implementing the vision is estimated at between DKK 150 million and DKK 200 million. It is now up to politicians at Copenhagen City Hall to decide whether to allocate funding for the project in the municipality’s upcoming budget.

Copenhagen’s Mayor for Climate, Environment and Technical Affairs, Line Barfod, welcomed the initiative.

“Many socially vulnerable people call Sundholm home. It is also an area with several schools and daycare institutions, meaning that many people use it in their everyday lives. The outdoor areas are worn down and in need of improvement. I therefore look forward to discussing the new vision plan with my political colleagues at City Hall,” she said.

The completed vision plan was prepared by the consultancy team Os Arkitekter, Carlberg and Sweco in close cooperation with local residents, staff, users and other stakeholders connected to Sundholm.

The plan was presented at a Constitution Day event under the theme “Together for Sundholm.” The programme included an exhibition, a Constitution Day speech, presentations and a political garden debate. The event was organised by Sundholm 8 Community House.
