Danish citizen who was on the same flight as a person infected with hantavirus has tested negative for the virus.

This was announced by the Statens Serum Institut (SSI).

The Danish citizen had been on the same flight as a Dutch national who later died after being infected with hantavirus. The deceased had previously been aboard the cruise ship MV Hondius.

According to SSI, analyses show that no hantavirus has been detected in the Danish citizen. Instead, a commonly circulating cold virus was found in respiratory tract samples.

“We received the sample at around 3 p.m. on Friday afternoon and had a result approximately six hours later. The process reflects both a rapid laboratory response and close cooperation between SSI, the Danish Patient Safety Authority, the Danish Health Authority and the regions,” said Uffe Vest Schneider, Head of Department for Virology and Microbiological Preparedness at SSI.

The sample was analysed using several PCR tests capable of detecting genetic material from viruses, and SSI considers the result reliable.

The Danish Patient Safety Authority is in contact with the individual, who remains in isolation.

According to SSI, two Danish citizens have been exposed to possible infection in connection with the cruise ship MV Hondius, and the Danish Patient Safety Authority is monitoring both individuals.

SSI also stated that the institute continues to follow developments and remains in ongoing contact with national and international authorities.

Hantavirus is primarily transmitted from rodents to humans, typically through inhalation of dust contaminated with excrement. The disease often causes flu-like symptoms but can in some cases develop into a serious illness affecting the lungs and kidneys. Certain variants, including the Andes virus from South America, can in rare cases be transmitted between humans.
