Copenhagen Achieves 100% Electric Bus Network

All bus routes in Copenhagen are now electric, after lines 19 and 5C were the last to be converted. This means that a political target set in 2016 for emission-free bus operations has now been fully achieved.

“The fight for cleaner air has been a key priority for me since I entered politics, and I am therefore truly pleased that we have now fully completed the transition to 100 percent electric buses. It is a major milestone that Copenhagen is now a city where public transport is green and neither pollutes nor emits CO2. This makes a significant difference for the climate and the air we breathe every day,” says Lord Mayor Sisse Marie Welling (SF).

The transition results in an annual CO2 reduction of around 14,700 tonnes and also contributes to improved air quality, as electric buses do not emit NOx or engine particles.

“Congratulations to the City of Copenhagen. Not only on the new electric buses on lines 19 and 5C, but equally on the fact that all municipal bus routes now run on electricity. This is a historic milestone, contributing to Movia’s total share of electric buses now reaching 72 percent,” says Movia Traffic Director Jeppe Gaard.
