19-year-old woman arrested for begging on Strøget in Aarhus
A 19-year-old Romanian woman was arrested in central Aarhus on Wednesday afternoon after police received a report of begging.
East Jutland Police were dispatched to Ryesgade at around 12:39 p.m., where two people were reportedly sitting and begging in a manner that caused a nuisance to passers-by.
At the scene, officers found a woman sitting on the ground with a sign in front of her and a cup in her hand, which she held out toward passers-by to ask for money.
The woman was identified as a 19-year-old Romanian national. She was informed that begging is illegal in Denmark and was subsequently arrested and taken to the police station for questioning.
She was released again at 3:03 p.m. and has been summoned to a court hearing at the District Court in Aarhus later this spring.
There she is charged with violating the Penal Code by begging from random passers-by under aggravating circumstances. In connection with the hearing, the prosecution will request that she be given a warning of expulsion under the Aliens Act.
