Denmark enters into nuclear cooperation with France
Denmark has accepted France’s invitation to enter into enhanced nuclear cooperation.
At a press conference on Monday evening, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen (S) said that the agreement applies to Denmark and not to other parts of the Kingdom, and that the cooperation must respect “current Danish nuclear policy,” which is not changed by this decision.
Minister of Defence Troels Lund (V) emphasized that no nuclear weapons will be stationed on Danish soil, and that the cooperation will not replace NATO’s nuclear cooperation, but will serve as a supplement.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Lars Løkke Rasmussen (M) stressed that we are in a “complex security policy situation.”
France’s President Manuel Macron had already earlier in the day announced the new strategy and mentioned Denmark in that connection. Macron also stated that France will increase the number of nuclear warheads.
