Denmark’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Lars Løkke Rasmussen, will visit Rwanda in the coming days, where he will mark the opening of Denmark’s new embassy in the capital, Kigali.

The visit takes place as part of the government’s ambition to strengthen Denmark’s presence in Africa and cooperation with African partners. In connection with the opening of the embassy, the Foreign Minister will meet with representatives of Danish businesses and Rwandan entrepreneurs. Opportunities and challenges for Danish and European companies as well as investments in Rwanda will be discussed.

The programme also includes a meeting with Rwanda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Olivier Nduhungirehe. Among other topics, the two ministers will discuss how cooperation between Denmark and Rwanda can be strengthened.

-“My trip to Rwanda and the opening of the embassy are a natural extension of the government’s ambition to strengthen Denmark’s footprint in Africa and cooperation with our African partners – not least at a time of shifting geopolitical winds. Rwanda is a country undergoing rapid development with strong ambitions in innovation, tech and the green transition, and Danish solutions can play a role here,” says Minister for Foreign Affairs Lars Løkke Rasmussen.

During the visit, the Foreign Minister will also meet with civil society representatives to discuss the human rights situation in the country. He will also visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial, a memorial to the victims of the 1994 genocide in Rwanda.

Finally, the Foreign Minister will visit the University of Rwanda, where he will meet young Rwandans who may consider looking towards Europe for their further education.
