More Danes choose the health insurance card on their mobile phone
More than three million Danes have now downloaded the health insurance card app and created a digital health insurance card on their mobile phone.
Specifically, 3,063,873 citizens have started using the app, and the digital solution is now used around 165,000 times a day. The digital health insurance card is highlighted as both more secure and more practical than the physical plastic card, as it is always up to date and rarely forgotten, since most people carry their mobile phone with them.
The strong uptake is welcomed by Danish Regions.
“I am pleased that Danes have truly embraced the health insurance card on their mobile phones. It is easy, practical and another milestone in the digitalisation of the healthcare system. The regions’ investments in digital infrastructure together with municipalities and the state continue. And with the implementation of the healthcare reform, Danes will get a more local, coherent and digital healthcare system,” says Anders Kühnau, Chairman of Danish Regions.
At the same time, an option has been introduced to reduce the use of plastic cards. Since 27 May 2025, all Danes over the age of 15 have been able to opt out of receiving a new plastic health insurance card, for example in connection with moving or changing doctor, if they prefer to use the app exclusively.
“If you can manage with the app, you can choose to say no to the plastic card. In doing so, you help save resources and reduce the climate footprint,” says Anders Kühnau.
During 2025, the regions sent out 1,798,458 plastic health insurance cards to citizens, which according to Danish Regions shows significant potential for saving resources. The health insurance card app can be used in the same way as the physical card, including at the doctor’s and at libraries. The app was developed by the Danish Agency for Digital Government in cooperation with the Ministry of the Interior and Health, Local Government Denmark (KL) and Danish Regions.
So far, around 140,000 Danes have taken advantage of the option to completely opt out of the plastic card and rely solely on the health insurance card on their mobile phone. Deregistration can be done directly via the health insurance card app, which can be downloaded from the App Store and Google Play. According to the regions, security is high, as the app is protected by the phone’s passcode, fingerprint or Face ID, unlike the physical card.
