Denmark secured European Championship gold in a dramatic final
In an intense final at the Boxen arena, where Denmark and Germany faced each other, the Danish handball players emerged triumphant with a 34–27 victory, securing the European Championship gold medal. The atmosphere was electric, and both teams displayed impressive physicality and energy, even after weeks of demanding matches.
The opening phase of the game featured tough play, with Germany’s Julian Köster finding too much space to shoot at the Danish goal. Denmark’s central defence, manned by Mads Hoxer and Magnus Saugstrup, quickly adjusted and managed to limit the Germans. Mathias Gidsel, who impressed with his offensive sharpness, played his part in pushing Denmark into the lead, particularly after Germany’s Tom Kiesler was shown a red card.
Although Denmark led 18–16 at half-time, the match was far from over. In the second half, Germany’s goalkeeper Andreas Wolff proved to be a formidable opponent, saving several clear chances. However, Denmark’s Kevin Møller responded with an outstanding performance of his own, keeping the Germans at bay even as they attempted to turn the game around by attacking with seven players.
Denmark reacted swiftly to Germany’s attempts to change their style of play. Johan Hansen played a crucial role, especially from the penalty line, and with just five minutes remaining, Denmark’s victory seemed all but secured when Emil Nielsen saved a penalty.
With a solid lead and under pressure from the Danish fans in the Boxen, Denmark were able to finish the match strongly. Further challenges from Germany, including another red card, came too late to change the outcome. The Danes could therefore celebrate a successful and memorable European Championship final, securing the title as European champions.
