Municipality to fly the Greenlandic flag every Wednesday

Read Time:1 Minute, 19 Second

In the future, the Greenlandic flags will be flown on the flagpole in front of Holbæk Town Hall every Wednesday.

At its meeting on Wednesday evening, the municipal council decided that Greenlandic flags, Erfalasorput, are to be flown.

“When we fly the Greenlandic flag, we send a clear signal that we stand together. Greenland is an important part of our Realm Community, and we wish to show respect for the Greenlandic people’s independence, culture and right to shape their own future. The flag is also more than a symbol. It represents a people, a culture and a history. With this decision, the Municipal Council wishes to show that Holbæk Municipality demonstrates solidarity and stands for values such as respect, community and an international outlook when pressure is experienced from outside,” says Holbæk Municipality’s mayor, Christina Krzyrosiak Hansen.

The first time Erfalasorput will be flown is this Saturday, and on that occasion all interested parties are invited to a short ceremony at 10:00 a.m. in front of the Old Town Hall, where the mayor will give a speech and there will be communal singing.

The flag flying will then take place every Wednesday until Greenland’s National Day on 21 June.

“As in other Danish municipalities, the flag flying is intended as a visible marking of the close historical, cultural and political connection between Greenland and Denmark. The Greenlandic flag symbolises both pride, independence and a strong cultural identity and is used here as an active expression of community and mutual respect within the Realm Community,” explains Christina Krzyrosiak Hansen.
