Many Took to the Streets for Greenland
Up to 20,000 people demonstrated on Saturday afternoon against Donald Trump’s demand to take over Greenland.
Many carried banners, placards, and Danish and Greenlandic flags.
At City Hall Square (Rådhuspladsen), speeches were given by, among others, Pipaluk Lyng (member of Inatsisartut for IA), Minister of Taxation Ane Halsboe-Jørgensen (S), and commentator Anja Geisler. Musician Thomas Buttenschøn provided music for the many attendees.
After the speeches at City Hall Square, the demonstration moved on to the American Embassy, where speeches were given by, among others, Laila Bertelsen, Pelle Dragsted (Red–Green Alliance), and Jan E. Jørgensen (Venstre). Birthe Lyberth led communal singing, and Josef Tarrak, Carl Knast, and Emil from Suspekt performed.
In addition to Copenhagen, demonstrations were also held in Aarhus, Aalborg, Odense, and Nuuk.
Behind the demonstrations are, among others, Uagut – the National Organization for Greenlanders in Denmark, the civic initiative “Hands Off Kalaallit Nunaat,” and Inuit – the Joint Association of Greenlandic Local Associations in Denmark.
