The ice is not safe for traffic

Copenhagen Police reports that the ice on the city’s lakes is not safe for traffic.

This follows a large number of reports received on Saturday concerning people moving about on the ice.

The City of Copenhagen checks the ice thickness daily on 11 selected lakes in the city, and only when the ice is 16–18 cm thick is permission given to access it. At that point, signs are put up stating “Færdsel på isen tilladt” ( “Access to the ice is permitted”).

Apart from these 11 selected lakes, it is not permitted to go onto the ice, even if the ice may appear to be thick enough.

The police encourage parents to talk to their children about the dangers of being on the ice.

You can see daily which lakes Copenhagen Municipality opens for traffic on the municipality’s website (in Danish).
