From Building Fires to False Alarms: A Busy New Year for The Greater Copenhagen Fire Department

Read Time:2 Minute, 33 Second

During the New Year duty period (from 08:00 on 31 December to 08:00 on 1 January), The Greater Copenhagen Fire Department responded to a wide range of incidents across the capital area, including fires, traffic accidents, technical assistance and inspections.

The first reported incident relevant to the period occurred at 10:22, when crews were deployed to Hjørringgade following a report of a major water leak in a residential building. The response included the use of a damage-control module to limit the extent of the water damage before the case was handed over to a damage service company.

At 15:16, the fire department attended a single-vehicle traffic accident on Stavangergade, where a car had collided with a traffic island. Firefighters secured the scene, handled an oil spill and cleared debris from the roadway before handing responsibility over to the police.

Later in the afternoon at 16:15, crews were dispatched to Skelkær following reports of a serious fire in a garden allotment house. The fire posed a risk of spreading to a neighboring structure. Firefighters carried out containment and extinguishing operations, and the residents had already evacuated before the arrival of emergency services. The site was subsequently handed over to police and damage services.

At 16:43, a smaller fire involving a trash container was extinguished on Holmbladsgade. This was followed at 17:21 by a call concerning a gas odor in a building on Bremensgade. An inspection was conducted, but no abnormalities were found.

At 17:31, a report of a building fire at Arildsgård was investigated and determined to involve a controlled bonfire at a designated fire pit rather than a structural fire.

As the evening progressed, the fire department responded to several fires involving waste containers and street refuse. These included incidents at 18:16 on Borgmestervangen, 18:27 on Havekrogen, 20:13 on Serridslevvej and 20:59 on Drosselvej, all of which were extinguished using standard firefighting equipment.

At 19:41, firefighters were called to Kastelsvej following reports of smoke in an apartment. The smoke was traced to lighting a wood-burning stove, and no fire was confirmed. The scene was subsequently handed over to the police.

At 22:09, a vegetation fire involving grass and bushes was reported on Vilhelm Topsøes Vej and was quickly brought under control. Later in the night, at 23:23, crews assisted police and medical services following a single-vehicle accident on Nørrebrogade, where a car had collided with a building.

After midnight, further container and refuse fires were handled at 00:06 on Smyrnavej and at 01:00 on Ørestads Boulevard. At 00:30, firefighters conducted an inspection at Amalienborg Slotsplads after a gas alarm was activated; no cause was found.

In addition to these incidents, the fire department responded to a significant number of automatic fire alarms that proved to be false. Over the course of the period, The Greater Copenhagen Fire Department attended 22 blind alarms, primarily triggered by cooking fumes, steam, dust from construction work or technical faults in alarm systems
