Fewer Swedes Choose to Study in Denmark After Changes to Medical Education
The number of Swedes studying at higher education institutions in Denmark has declined significantly over the past decade, partly due to changes in admission rules for Danish medical programmes.
This is reported by the news agency News Øresund.
These reforms were introduced to reduce the number of Swedish medical students, who had previously benefited from differences in grading systems. As a result, the number of Swedish medical students in Denmark has fallen sharply, from a peak in 2007 to just 78 in 2024. Overall, the total number of Swedish students in Denmark dropped from 1,555 in 2014/15 to 943 in 2023/24.
The trend also reflects a broader decline in Swedes pursuing full degrees abroad, alongside expanded medical education capacity in Sweden and growing interest in other European study destinations.
