A new super cycle route on Strandvejen will make it easier and safer to travel by bike along the busy corridor in Copenhagen. Around 7,500 cyclists already use Strandvejen on a typical weekday, and the upcoming project is designed to give them a faster and safer journey.

The City of Copenhagen will establish the super cycle route between Svanemøllen Station and Tuborgvej. Among other improvements, traffic safety at the Strandvejen–Tuborgvej intersection will be enhanced, meaning cyclists will no longer need to merge with cars in right-turn lanes.

The city will also build advanced bus platforms at four stops along Strandvejen so that passengers, including those using line 1A, will no longer step directly onto the cycle lane. This is expected to improve safety for both bus users and cyclists.

The project forms part of the upcoming 7.7-kilometre coastal cycle route, the Kystbaneruten, which will connect Klampenborg Station with Svanemøllen Station.

In connection with Budget 2024, Socialdemokratiet, Konservative, SF, Radikale Venstre, Venstre, Liberal Alliance and Dansk Folkeparti allocated DKK 12.2 million to the project. The Danish state has also pledged DKK 4.5 million in support from the national cycling fund.

The Finance Committee will discuss the proposal at a meeting on 9 December. Once approved by the City Council, construction can begin, with completion expected towards the end of 2026.

Lord Mayor Lars Weiss (Social Democrats) welcomes the initiative:

“If we want more people to choose the bike for commuting – even when distances exceed five kilometres – it is crucial that cycling feels attractive and safe. Super cycle routes help achieve that, and I am pleased that we are now adding another route that will also strengthen Copenhagen’s links with neighbouring municipalities.”
