City Council Committee Awards Christmas Support to 63 Organisations

For yet another year, the City of Copenhagen’s Social Affairs Committee has allocated financial support for Christmas activities aimed at vulnerable residents. In December, hundreds of volunteers across the city organise festive gatherings, shared meals and social activities for people who might otherwise spend the holiday alone.
This year, the committee has granted a total of DKK 475,000 to 63 organisations and associations that will host Christmas initiatives for vulnerable groups.
According to the Mayor for Social Affairs, Karina Vestergård Madsen (Red–Green Alliance), many Copenhagen residents struggle financially during the Christmas period, and the consequences of recent welfare reforms mean that more families, single parents, vulnerable citizens and people experiencing homelessness now rely on support. She welcomes the fact that the committee has once again chosen to prioritise Christmas initiatives for those most in need.
The decision was unanimous, with special priority given to activities taking place on Christmas Eve and initiatives expected to reach the largest number of vulnerable residents throughout the month of December.
Among this year’s grant recipients are the organisation Det Runde Bord, which distributes Christmas meal boxes through its initiative “Jul på Hjul”, and the association Juleløses Jul, whose choir Lyspigerne brings Christmas cheer to shelters and care homes.
Several organisations receive more than one grant, as support has been allocated to different initiatives under the same organisation. A full list of the supported organisations is provided by the municipality and includes initiatives across the city, with amounts ranging from DKK 3,000 to DKK 35,000.
