This Sunday marks the first Sunday of Advent, and it is also the day when the approximately 20-meter tall Christmas tree on City Hall Square in Copenhagen will be lit.

At 3:00 p.m., a parade will depart from Nyhavn towards City Hall Square with Santa Claus and fire trucks from the Capital Region’s Emergency Preparedness. Arriving at City Hall Square around 3:45 p.m., Santa Claus and his elves will distribute candy. Meanwhile, the Copenhagen Municipality School Orchestra will provide Christmas music. Lord Mayor Lars Weiss will give a speech, and then the large Christmas tree will be lit at 4:00 p.m.

The tradition of having a Christmas tree on City Hall Square began in 1914, and since then, the large Christmas tree on City Hall Square has been a central part of Copenhageners’ Christmas, interrupted for only one year during World War II.

In addition to the lights, the approximately 20-meter tall Christmas tree will also be decorated with 100 Christmas hearts from the Children’s Office.

This year, the Christmas tree will be lit from November 30th to December 29th between 6:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m., and again from 4:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. The City of Copenhagen follows the Christmas lighting in the inner city’s shopping streets, which this year will be turned off at 10:00 p.m.
