A unanimous Børne- og ungeudalg (Children and Youth Committee) in Copenhagen Municipality has decided to renovate toilet facilities at 17 public schools from 2026 to 2029. The decision is part of the implementation of the 2026 budget and aims to ensure that the schools’ toilets meet the requirements outlined in the functional program for new schools.

A total of 80 million Danish kroner has been allocated in the budget for the improvement of school toilets. Of this amount, 57.7 million kroner will go towards the actual renovation work, while 22.3 million kroner is earmarked for educational programs, maintenance, and increased cleaning. The funds will be distributed over four years starting in 2026.

According to Children and Youth Mayor Jakob Næsager (C), proper toilet facilities are a prerequisite for children’s well-being and daily life. The Mayor emphasizes that the first step will be to renovate the existing toilets, followed by finding funds to establish additional toilets where there is still a need.

The committee has chosen to prioritize renovation over new construction in order to make the most of the available funds.

The 17 schools that will have their toilets renovated are:
Bavnehøj School, Øster Farimagsgade School, Den Classenske Legatskole, Valby School, Sølvgade School, Gerbrand School, Husum School, Vesterbro Ny School, Højdevangen School, Langelinieskolen, Lergravsparkens School, Nyboder School, Nørrebro Park School, Amager Fælled School, Kirsebærhavens School, Lykkebo School, and Christianshavns School.

Additionally, there is already 50 million kroner allocated in the 2024 budget for the renovation of toilets in 15 schools with the poorest conditions. In addition, 7.1 million kroner is allocated for improvements to Rådmandsgade School.
