The Social Democratic lead candidate at Tuesday’s municipal election suffered a painful defeat and did not become Lord Mayor – and she has now chosen to step down from Danish politics.

She told the Danish Broadcasting Corporation (DR):

“I have made a decision to leave Danish politics. Personally, I did not get a particularly good election result in Copenhagen.”

When the votes were counted, the Social Democrats ended up only the third-largest party in Copenhagen, behind the Red–Green Alliance and the Socialist People’s Party. Pernille Rosenkrantz-Theil received only 11,808 personal votes.

Pernille Rosenkrantz-Theil opted for the position of Mayor for Employment, Integration and Business, which was one of the two remaining mayoral posts after the other positions had been allocated in the coalition agreement. But she will not be mayor after all.
