Capital Region of Denmark Strengthens Emergency Preparedness
The Capital Region of Denmark is ramping up its emergency preparedness efforts by further securing the supply of critical goods for the healthcare system. This move comes amid growing uncertainty and potential disruptions that may impact hospital operations.
As part of the region’s overall preparedness strategy, the regional council has allocated DKK 10 million to a centrally managed fund earmarked for the purchase of essential items used in hospital treatment. Starting in 2026, an additional DKK 5 million will be added annually to further strengthen preparedness. Moreover, DKK 38 million has been set aside over the next three years to expand the region’s storage capacity.
-“I am deeply concerned about the incidents currently affecting Denmark. Over the past year, the Capital Region has increased its focus on preparedness, and one of the areas we are reinforcing is the supply of critical goods. We must be resilient when it comes to the medicines and other items that are vital during a crisis to maintain emergency and life-saving treatments at our hospitals,” says Thomas Rohden (B), 2nd Vice Chair of the Capital Region of Denmark.
He also highlights the need to ensure adequate storage and secure supply chains.
-“When we stock up on life-saving items, we also need more space to ensure supply security in the coming years. At the same time, we must ensure that the goods don’t expire and that we don’t become dependent on single suppliers. That’s far too vulnerable in times of crisis,” says Thomas Rohden.
As part of these efforts, the region has established a dedicated emergency preparedness unit with seven employees. Working in collaboration with hospitals, businesses, departments, and regional leadership, the unit aims to make preparedness more systematic and actionable. Alarm drills for the regional crisis management team are scheduled to take place right after the autumn break.
At the same time, local preparedness at hospitals and centres across the region is being reinforced to better handle future challenges.
-“In addition to strengthening preparedness plans and identifying vulnerabilities throughout the region, exercises are a crucial part of building a robust emergency response. We are scaling this up – in collaboration with the Danish Emergency Management Agency,” says Thomas Rohden.
