New study: Many drivers forget to use turn signals in traffic

A new study conducted by YouGov for Gjensidige shows that many Danish drivers often fail to use turn signals in traffic – to the annoyance and danger of other road users. According to the survey, four out of ten people experience other drivers forgetting to signal with turn signals daily, while three out of ten experience it weekly.

Failure to use turn signals happens despite it being an important part of safe and predictable driving. This is especially true in everyday traffic, where lane changes and turns in both directions require clear signaling.

Lene Rasmussen, Director of Claims at Gjensidige, views the trend seriously and emphasizes the importance of correct signaling in traffic.
-“Using turn signals is one of the most important things to remember to ensure safe and secure traffic. Turn signals make it clear to other road users both on and off the roads what a driver’s intentions are, so it is always advisable to indicate well in advance when turning or changing lanes on the motorway,” she says.

Failure to signal when changing lanes on the motorway can also have financial consequences. Here, one risks a fine of 1,000 kroner. However, Lene Rasmussen believes that the financial penalty should not be the motivator for using turn signals.
-“Even though it is only on the motorway that it is mandatory to signal when changing lanes, the recommendation is to always signal when no longer staying in one’s lane. In this way, you give other road users a much better opportunity to react to you in traffic, contributing to a much better experience especially during busy morning and afternoon hours,” she declares.

The survey is based on responses from 1,009 respondents in 2025. Only two percent report that they never experience drivers forgetting to use turn signals.
