Novo Nordisk announced Wednesday morning that 9,000 employees are to be dismissed, with 5,000 of them in Denmark.

Today, Novo Nordisk declared a major transformation aimed at simplifying the organization and freeing up resources for growth in diabetes and obesity. As part of the plan, the company will reduce the global workforce by around 9,000 out of a total of 78,400 positions. Approximately 5,000 of these positions are expected to be eliminated in Denmark.

The goal is to accelerate decision-making processes and enhance investments in research, commercial activities, and production. The company expects this reorganization to result in annual savings of around 8 billion Danish kroner by the end of 2026.

The one-time costs associated with the restructuring are estimated to amount to approximately 8 billion Danish kroner. Consequently, Novo Nordisk now anticipates lower growth in operating profit in 2025 at 4-10 percent, down from the previous 10-16 percent.

CEO Mike Doustdar stated that the decision is necessary to make Novo Nordisk more agile in a more competitive market: “It is always difficult to bid farewell to talented colleagues, but we are convinced that this is the right path for Novo Nordisk’s long-term success.”
