Inter-ministerial working group to explore models for euthanasia
The government has decided to establish an inter-ministerial working group that will explore possible models for euthanasia in Denmark. The purpose is to create a factual basis for further political discussions on the subject.
According to Minister of the Interior and Health Sophie Løhde, the issue of euthanasia is “very complex and filled with dilemmas.” She emphasizes:
– “In the government, we have not taken a stance on whether euthanasia should be introduced here at home, but now we are initiating work to explore possible models for euthanasia that we can use in further political considerations.”
The working group will draw on, among other things, the reflection paper from the Committee for a more dignified death, the Ethics Council’s opinion, and international experiences. The work will involve relevant health professional, legal, ethical, and economic considerations.
The group will be composed of officials from the Ministry of the Interior and Health, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Social Affairs and Housing, and the Ministry of the Elderly. Additionally, relevant experts will be continuously involved.
The work is expected to be completed within two years.
