Denmark, along with seven other Nordic and Baltic countries – the so-called NB-8 – has issued a joint statement on Saturday, reaffirming their steadfast support for Ukraine and efforts to stop Russia’s war against the country.

The statement comes after Vladimir Putin’s meeting with Donald Trump in Alaska.

In the statement, it is said that a just and lasting peace can only be achieved in cooperation with Ukraine. It is emphasized that no decisions regarding Ukraine can be made without Ukraine, and no decisions regarding Europe can be made without Europe.

The statement points out that experience shows that Putin cannot be trusted, and ultimately it is Russia’s responsibility to halt its gross violations of international law. Russian aggression and imperialist ambitions are highlighted as the fundamental causes of the war.

Leaders stress that a peace agreement requires a ceasefire and credible security guarantees for Ukraine. It is noted that the agreement must include firm and concrete commitments from transatlantic partners to protect Ukraine from future aggression. In this context, President Trump’s statement that the USA is ready to participate in security guarantees is welcomed. There should be no restrictions on Ukraine’s armed forces or on the country’s cooperation with other nations, and Russia has no veto over Ukraine’s path towards the EU and NATO.

The statement demands that Russia immediately return children who have been abducted from occupied areas, as well as war prisoners and civilian detainees.

At the same time, the leaders state that they will continue to arm Ukraine and strengthen Europe’s defense to deter further Russian aggression. As long as Russia continues its attacks, sanctions and broader economic measures will be intensified to put pressure on the Russian war economy.

Finally, it is firmly stated that the Nordic and Baltic countries stand unwaveringly in their support for Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity.
