Lorena Wiebes wins in sprint at Copenhagen Sprint
Dutch rider Lorena Wiebes from SD Worx-Protime was the fastest as Copenhagen Sprint was decided in a mass sprint on Sølvgade in front of the Statens Museum for Kunst on Saturday.
With her victory, she pushed Italian Elisa Balsamo and Chiara Consonni to second and third place respectively, while Amalie Dideriksen finished as the top Danish rider in eighth place.
As has often been the case this spring, Wiebes proved untouchable in the finish, despite a dramatic conclusion to the race.
-“It feels absolutely fantastic. The spectators made it a huge experience – even through the small towns along the route, the atmosphere was amazing, and especially on the circuit in the city center, it was intense. There were a couple of crashes, but fortunately, I stayed in front and out of trouble,” said Lorena Wiebes after the victory.
She also explained that a crash cost her team an important leadout rider:
-“We lost an important rider for our leadout in one of the crashes, but we still managed to do it. I launched the sprint a bit earlier than planned – but better early than too late, and luckily, it went well in the end.”
Elisa Balsamo, who claimed the second place, described the race as demanding:
-“It was a tough race and a really stressful finish, especially on the last lap, where there was intense jostling for position. But I think we rode a really good race as a team, and I would love to come back again next year,” said Balsamo.
The race started in Roskilde and covered 151 km through North Zealand, passing through towns such as Frederikssund, Hillerød, Farum, and Ballerup before reaching an 11 km circuit in central Copenhagen.
There were several breakaway attempts along the way, but none were allowed to gain a decisive advantage. The sprint teams kept the race together, and Copenhagen Sprint ended as expected – in a mass sprint.
Copenhagen Sprint is a part of the UCI Women’s World Tour and was held for the first time this year. The men’s version will be held on Sunday, starting in Roskilde at 10:45 am.
