Mette Frederiksen meets with Germany’s Chancellor in Berlin
Today, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen travels to Berlin to meet with the new German Chancellor, Friedrich Merz.
The visit aims to strengthen the bilateral cooperation between Denmark and Germany and takes place less than three weeks before the upcoming NATO summit.
On the agenda for the meeting are topics such as Europe’s military build-up, support for Ukraine, green transition, competitiveness, and migration policy. According to the Prime Minister, Denmark and Germany share a common desire for innovation in these areas.
“We are in the most serious security policy situation in decades. The world order we have built up over generations is being challenged like never before. The times call for a stronger Europe and solidarity across borders. We must show that we stand by our values and collectively move our continent forward,” says Mette Frederiksen.
The Prime Minister also expresses confidence in the collaboration with the German Chancellor:
“A strong Europe requires a strong Germany. The discussions I have already had with Chancellor Merz, and his willingness to strengthen the German defense and support Ukraine, make me hopeful. We agree on many things, and cooperation with Germany will be even more important in the coming years,” she says.
Frederiksen also highlights the importance of cooperation on the EU’s external borders and a more efficient asylum system, as well as on green energy, where, according to the Prime Minister, there is potential to promote both competitiveness and energy independence in Europe.
