Gender Equality: Women Can Now Also Be Ordered for Military Service

Read Time:43 Second

The Danish Parliament today passed a bill that means women and men will be completely equal in terms of military service obligations.

Until now, only men could be ordered to serve in the military, but now women can also be ordered to serve if there are not enough volunteers.

Starting July 1st, all women turning 18 will be summoned to the Armed Forces Day on precisely the same terms as men, with mandatory attendance.

The new system for the holding of Armed Forces Day will take place during 2026, where all women, on equal footing with men, will undergo screening and draw a lottery number. Women and men alike can be ordered to serve in the military if there are not enough volunteers.

In 2026, the conscription period will be increased to 11 months, instead of the current length of 4 months.
